What is Magnetic particle inspection (MPI)

Magnetic particle testing is use to detect defects or cracks at or near the surface in ferromagnetic metals. Crack is identified on magnetic particle due to disruptive magnetic field on area where crack is located.

How does it work?

It works on a principle that any metal object that is magnetized will be surrounded by an invisible magnetic field. The magnetic lines of force are perpendicular to the direction of the electric current. The defect will cause a disruption in the magnetic field. Magnetic particle testing allows you to easily see that disruption and identify the defect.

Application of Magnetic particle inspection (MPI)

Magnetic particle testing can be use on magnetized metal object such as  iron, steel, nickel, cobalt, etc.

Problem detection

Surface and near-surface defects: cracks, seams, laps, cold shuts, and porosity.
