Introduction of Ultrasonic Testing

A testing method using short wave ultrasonic transmitted into the object to detect subsurface defects. Ultrasonic Testing mostly use on carbon steel object, welding joint, and roller lamination in steel plate.

How does the technology work

The ultrasonic sensor connected to the diagnostic machine. Scroll the sensor over testing area and the sensor receive reflection of pulse wave back to the machine. The diagnostic machine displays results in form of signal with  an amplitude representing the intensity of the reflection and the distance, representing the arrival time of the reflection.

Application of Ultrasonic testing

  • Subsurface defects in carbon steel object
  • Welding joint
  • Steel plate roller

Problem detection

  • Cracks in material and weld joint
  • Lamination in steel plate
  • Incomplete penetration of welding

Comparison of UT and PAUT

  • Result display as signal
  • Consist of 1-2 elements in a single probe
  • Effective for small volumetric flaw
  • Result display as picture
  • Consist of 6 – 64 elements in a single probe
  • Effective for planar flaw
  • Can assess through-wall depth information and discriminate flaws throughout the thickness
